What you find on the newspapers we paint on: Various designs for gemstones to decorate my phantom droids. And because everyone is supposed to get a different one (as far as 30 is still possible), we try out a few beforehand.
Once I’ve decided which one it should be, painting it is very easy, just provide the colours and off you go. Apart from the base colour, all the stones have two different shades of light and one dark shade. If you look closely, you can see how the stones are painted, first an oval in the base colour, then in the lower third a semicircle in the first lighter shade, and in the upper third a circle in the darker shade, then in the semicircle below a lying crescent moon in the even lighter shade, and finally the highlights. At the top of the shading is a point-shaped highlight, and at the bottom opposite another in the shape of a horizontal comma, which adapts to the curve of the stone.
With the size of the gemstones on the chest of the phantom droids, you can still manage without blending on the stone, but if the stones become even larger, then it looks better if you spread the wet colour so that the transitions between the colour tones disappear. And I find that any gemstone on a miniature, however small, benefits immensely from a coat or two of glossy clear varnish.

Was sich so auf den Zeitungen findet, auf denen wir malen: Verschiedene Entwürfe für Edelsteine, mit denen meine Phantomdroiden geschmückt werden. Und weil da jeder einen anderen bekommen soll (so weit das bei 30 noch geht), wird vorher ein bißchen herumprobiert.
Wenn ich mich dann entschieden habe, welcher es sein soll, ist das Malen ganz einfach, nur noch die Farben bereitstellen, und los geht’s. Alle Steine haben außer der Grundfarbe zwei verschiedenfarbige Aufhellungen, und eine dunkle Abschattierung. Wer genau hinsieht, kann erkennen, wie die Steine gemalt sind, erst ein Oval in der Grundfarbe, dann im unteren Drittel ein Halbkreis im ersten helleren Farbton, und im oberen Drittel ein Kreis im dunkleren Farbton, dann in dem Halbkreis unten eine liegende Mondsichel in dem noch helleren Farbton, und zum Schluß die Glanzlichter. Oben in der Abschattierung sitzt ein punktförmiges Glanzlicht, und unten gegenüber ein weiteres in der Form eines liegenden Kommas, das sich der Rundung des Steines anpaßt.
Bei der Größe der Edelsteine auf der Brust der Phantomdroiden kommt man noch ohne Mischen auf dem Stein aus, aber wenn die Steine noch größer werden, dann sieht es besser aus, wenn man die feuchte Farbe so verteilt, daß die Übergänge zwischen den Farbtönen verschwinden. Und ich finde, daß jeder noch so kleine Edelstein auf einer Miniatur ganz immens von ein oder zwei Schichten glänzendem Klarlack profitiert.
Ganz unten unter ‘Ethiopian’ ist übrigens mein Versuch zu sehen, einen schwarzen Edelstein zu gestalten. Sieht man’s?
